    It’s not being humble. The Octave question is technical. The most accurate and revealing time she answered this question was when she told at 3:10 the Japanese interviewer that she “experiments with the top part of her voice as an alto”. Translation: Mariah certainly has amazing range and is an Alto, sure, but she also has this specific ability to JUMP to the higher notes by making the squeaky voice. Earlier in the video a well informed inquisitive journalist asked “do you have breaks” and “how many breaks”. That was very technical and Mariah immediately replied “I DONT KNOW” because that would demystify the narrative that she covers 7 octaves smoothly. Basically she is well versed in PR and she is sticking to the story that made her a legend, even if upon technical analysis it would not make sense, it’s a nice legendary thing to be told you cover 7 octaves smoothly. She was not going to say “no I don’t because in technicality it is false”.

    Cringe just viewing her first Vegas residency and her struggle with alcoholism. Maybe it would have been better to have a mother’s discipline and singing lessons in her life. But that wasn’t in the cards for her. Let’s pray she makes it safely till her end if she loses the entirety of her voice for good. In the meantime we can support her and watch her play dress up on stage while she scatters with difficulty some high cries here and there. She really had the musical gift. Retrospectively, her career did take a turn when she chose to hang with Puff daddy and Brett Ratner, between perverts and her dysfunctional family, this lady with the insane gift did whatever she had to do. What irks me is the delusion of the newer lambs who give her a false narrative that even herself refuses to validate. Her truth is more interesting than that of an inane showbiz (gay) icon. People might want to reduce her to it and she let them do it, because it makes her money. But whenever she sits on Oprah it’s a different story and they always get surprised. Polarized, between pathetic figure and global superstar.

    In my opinion, she knows much more about her own vocal range than she reveals in interviews, but she chose from the beginning of her career not to admit this knowledge because 1) choice of marketing: she appears more humble and creates mystery about her voice, exciting the debate 2) her voice is unstable, so it's better to say that she doesn’t know what a G7 is than to say that she can hit that note and have to repeat it every time. 3) she wants to distance herself from the technical rigidity of singers like her mother, opting for freer and more improvised ways of singing to place more emphasis on musicality than technique.

    I'm genuinely confused. Is learning the artist full octave range not part of analyzing what the producers and general team of the artist will have to work with? She says some days she can't go high and others she can but isn't that normal?

    • @okebaram
      @okebaram Місяць тому

      No it isn't. The extremes of a person's range are rarely inclusive in the range of notes a song will have. Singing and hitting extreme notes is not the same.

    The whistle register singing is actually unbelievably drying for the throat I sung one day of constant whistles to film a video and my throat has been sensitive for 2 weeks since. Mariah's constantly singing using the tip of her chords to create this disconnected sound and it is dangerous for vocal health

    Rest and humidifiers are not a very efficacious strategy to protect your voice. She has vocal nodules and probably uses alcohol, talks excessively nowadays and enjoys parties, where she probably screams and shout, talk loud, anyway. This develops inflammation in your vocal cords and deteriorate your voice. She has to exercise regularly under the supervision of a professional, modify her routine to a healthier one and to follow up the CURRENT recommendations. Rest your voice hen you still have these bad habits means nothing.

    Head voice works like in a flute (where instead of vocal cords, the air flow bounces in the headroom and makes it resonate The Bee Gees' Staying Alive is argueably the best example for that. I think Mariah's whistle is just a head voice where her head contains narrower tunnels so it reaches higher frequencies

    It's interesting that Mariah herself never seems to actually claim she has a 7-octave range. She certainly has an impressive vocal range, but it's everyone else that attaches the actual number. I had a voice teacher at the time she broke but who didn't think it was actually seven, but he did think she had a strong voice.
